ATI is aiming to launch cards using the R420 around Comdex/late November, but this will really be a paper launch as we can't expect cards that early, although we can expect samples. Production and market availability of the cards is scheduled for Q1 2004. How will ATI solve the problem that this chip will be PCI Express based, and all that you will be able to buy until Q1 2004 is AGP 8X at the best? The answer is that ATI is going to develop a PCI Express to AGP bridge, so it will work with existing AGP platforms and still work when PCI Express boards hit the market. We expect that either R420 will get its new PCI Express brother in Q2 next year, or else ATI may introduce new technology to bump the speed up. We can now confirm that the card will have hardware support for both PS 3.0 and VS 3.0, to give developers more programmability and it will be able to achieve feats that NV35 and R350 is incapable of doing. As for memory we are still not too certain about the details, but GDDR2 seems like a fair bet to us. Ik vraag me af of er uberhaupt wel iets van Power VR komt. ik verwacht de Power VR series 5 niet eens, laat staan de Power VR series 8 :P Overigens is Slashhead al tijden geen betrouwbare bron meer ;)

En hoe wil je dat kunnen lezen als je vga kaart uit je systeem is :wink: Ik zet toch mijn PC uit als ik eraan ga knutselen. Al is et hot swapeble, loop liever GEEN risico als ook maar een heel klein beetje.

Apparently, the Markham, Ontario-based company prepares yet-another mainstream graphics processor based on the RV350 architecture. Its code-name is RV380 and it will come together with the R420, as unofficial sources said. The new ATI RV380 part will be manufactured using 0.13 micron fabrication technology process at TSMC. Just like the R420, the RV380 will have native PCI Express support, thus, expect the actual graphics cards powered by the VPU to be equipped with special PCI Express-to-AGP bridge. The RV380 will offer ground-breaking performance for mainstream market while sustaining competitive pricing due to robust architecture. The R300 architecture has plenty of headroom to develop further, just like its mainstream derivative RV350. In case the RV380 offer even more performance optimizations, higher clock-speeds and competitive pricing, it will be a massively successful product. I expect RV380 to offer performance close to the RADEON 9700, since the current RADEON 9600 PRO offers more speed compared to the RADEON 9500, but still cannot beat the RADEON 9500 PRO. The next member of ATI RV350 lineup will be the RV360 coming out later this year; it is very likely that its speed will exceed than that of the RADEON 9500 PRO, as a result, the RV380 part will offer us the same or nearly the same speed as offered by the RADEON 9700, but at lower price-point. The micro architecture of the RV380 as well as its clock-speed are not yet uncovered, though, I believe it will be based on the RADEON 9800 (R350) rather than on the RADEON 9700 (R300) design. This will result in more advanced FSAA support, F-buffer technology (pixel shader programs with unlimited number of instructions), Multiple Render Target, shadow volume rendering acceleration support and so on. As always, ATI Technologies will offer a number of solutions based on the same VPU, but offering different levels of performance depending on the price. ATI Technologies’ code-named RV380 will be announced in late 2003 or early 2004 with availability in the first quarter of 2004. Betekent dit dat ze een kaart gaan maken die zowel agp als pci-express tegelijk aan kan ? Of komen er twee versies ? En betekent dit het einde van agp-kaarten en dus geen kans op een upgrade die sneller is dan een 9800 Pro voor de pc's van dit jaar ?

//Jafo lees het artikel maar eens wat ik over PCI-Express heb gepost. erg leerzaam. Wat ik heb begrepen worden er videokaarten ontwikkeld door ATI en nVidia die zowel in een AGP8x slot kunnen als in een PCI-Express 16x slot. Hoe ze dat voor elkaar willen krijgen is mij een raadsel maar ik ben erg benieuwd. Als dit gaat lukken dan kun je dus gewoon een R420 of NV40 in je AGP 4x/8x slotje drukken. De eerste Moederborden met PCI-Express staan pas voor het 2e kwartaal van 2004 gepland. dus dat duurt nog wel even. Uiteindelijk komen er pure PCI-express videokaarten, echter dat zal pas in de loop van 2004 gaan gebeuren verwacht ik.
